Artist Nicola Tyson's farmhouse in New Paltz, New York, is an example of Shaker-like simplicity at its best. The cabinets designed by architect James Joseph were inspired by mid-19th-century farmhouses; a circa-1800 sawbuck table and ladder-back chairs made in 1810 look right at home alongside ample open shelving, a soapstone sink, wide-plank wood floors, and a Viking range.
